The Story of Jesus
The story is told realistically from all four Gospels, with events as nearly as possible in chronological order. Through it comes a powerful feeling of purpose, and of a terrible campaign waged single-handed and to the death. It shows Jesus as, unquestionably, an historical figure, as unprivileged man but with the light of divinity shining through him. He lived at a time and in a place we now know a good deal about from independent sources and archaeological discoveries; and modern translations have added new insights to the old text. Jesus himself left no documents or papers but many witnesses who had watched him heal, seen the feeding of the five thousand, and heard countless times his message which was to bring the whole world into the kingdom 'which is not meat and drink, but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit'. These men learned the Lord's Prayer from his lips, and passed it on so that it has come right down to our own generation. Of them it is Peter who speaks through St Mark's Gospel, and through St John's come the words of the only one among them who remained with Jesus throughout the night of questioning; the only one courageous enough to stand by him, at the foot of the cross, until the end.
